Herbert Wigwe was born on August 15, 1966, in River State, Nigeria. He had his early education where he grew up with his parents before he proceeded to the University of Nigeria where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in accountancy.

 

Herbert Wigwe went to study at the University College of North Wales on a Scholarship from the British Council and earned his masters degree in banking and finance. He also holds an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London.

 

Thereafter, Herbert Wigwe completed a course at the Harvard Business School Executive Management Program. He also holds an honorary Doctorate from the University of Nigeria.

Herbert Wigwe began his career as a management consultant at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos before he became a chartered accountant. Later on, he worked at Capital Bank before he joined Guaranty Trust Bank where he spent over a decade working in corporate and institutional banking before he rose to the executive director in charge of institutional banking.

 

Herbert Wigwe was the Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited until his demise. He was also the Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, and Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS). Before his demise, he received several awards for his outstanding contributions to the growth of the financial sector.
