Jimi Solanke popularly known as ‘Baba Agba’ or ‘Uncle Jimi’ was born on July 4, 1942, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He was a well-known Nigerian storyteller, film actor, dramatist, folk singer, poet, and playwright who is best Known for his songs like Onile Gogoro, Eje ka jo, Jenrokan, and Na Today You Come.

 

On February 5, 2024, it was made known to the public that Jimi Solanke had passed away. He died at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

Jimi Solanke Early Life and Education

Jimi Solanke popularly known as ‘Baba Agba’ or ‘Uncle Jimi’ was born on July 4, 1942, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He had his early education at Olowogbowo Methodist School before proceeding to Odogbolu Grammar School, Ogun State.

Jimi Solanke went to the  University of Ibadan, where he obtained a diploma certificate in drama. Thereafter, he joined the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of Ife.

Jimi Solanke Career

Jimi Solanke began his career when he relocated to the United States and created a drama group called The African Review. Thereafter, he established himself in Los Angeles, California where he became a master storyteller.

In 1986, Jimi Solanke returned to Nigeria to work with the Nigerian Television Authority. He anchored the popular program Storyland, where he told stories with the insertion of artistic works by artists. He also appeared in several shows in NTA including Village Headmaster, Sango, The Bar Beach Show, For Better For Worst, and many more.

Jimi Solanke was one of the pioneer members of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by Wole Soyinka. He starred in different Nollywood movies including  Kurumi, Chattering and the Song, Ovoramwen Nogbaisi, The Divorce, Death and the King’s Horseman, and Siswe Bansi’s Death. In the popular Nollywood movie, Jagunjagun, he played the voice of the narrator.
