What is BitPesa?
BitPesa is a digital foreign exchange & payment platform that uses the blockchain technology to reduce the cost of money transfer and increase payment time both locally and internationally.
BitPesa was founded by Elizabeth Rossiello in 2013, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. It has offices in London, Dakar and Lagos. Its goal is to become the largest licensed payment company in the UK, Africa and also in Europe.
Alongside boosting the speed of transactions between Africa and the rest of the world, BitPesa also tries to make it as cost efficient as possible.
This is all possible through the use of the bitcoin network. Before BitPesa transfers your money to another currency, it first transfers it to the bitcoin blockchain. This process makes transactions to be superfast and cheap.
BitPesa leverages the bitcoin’s low transaction fees to reduce the cost of sending money across international borders.

How to register/sign up on BitPesa
To sign up on BitPesa, you will need to input your name, email, mailing address and Date of birth. You will also need to verify your identity by uploading a government issued ID.
How transactions are processed on BitPesa
To process transactions on BitPesa:
Users are asked to input the quantity of Pound sterling that they would like to remit to Kenya. This sum is immediately translated into the quantity of Kenyan shillings that will be received and the amount of bitcoin that is required to process the transactions.
The user then specifies a person to receive the money by inputting their name, email and mobile money phone number.
The bitcoin address is subsequently generated and a 10 minutes’ countdown timer is initiated. The user must deposit the indicated amount of bitcoin to the specified address in order to complete the transaction.
